Student Opportunities

Eligibility

  • Candidates for the Youth Tour, Camp Kilowatt, Youth, Power & Hope Award, Nesius Scholarships, and 4-H Electric refund must be a son, daughter, or legal ward of a Jasper County REMC member
  • Page Day and the Indiana Cooperative Calendar Contest are open to any student in Indiana who meets the program criteria

Indiana Statehouse Page Day

  • Page Day with the Indiana Senate gives students an opportunity to learn about their state government and how bills become law
  • Highlights include:
    • A Statehouse tour
    • Mock bill activity Speakers
    • Other educational activities
    • Students may have the opportunity to see the Indiana Legislature in action and meet their legislator.

Camp Kilowatt

  • Camp Kilowatt is a fun and unique camp experience for sixth-grade students going into seventh grade across Indiana
  • Kids get the chance to learn more about energy while making new friends and enjoying fun activities and games

Indiana Cooperative Youth Tour

  • Each June, Indiana’s electric cooperatives sponsor a Youth Tour to Gettysburg and Washington, D.C.
  • Students who are eligible are going into their senior year of high school
  • Youth Tour offers a life-changing educational adventure
  • This 7-day trip includes visits with Hoosier U.S. Congressional leaders on Capitol Hill and a rally with over 1,800 student delegates from across the country

Indiana Cooperative Calendar Contest

  • Since 1998, Indiana Connection and participating Indiana electric cooperatives have held an annual art contest
  • Eligible participants are Indiana students in grades kindergarten through 12
  • The winning works from each grade are then used to illustrate the Cooperative Calendar of Student Art that participating REMCs/RECs have distributed

Bruce & Sharon Nesius Memorial Scholarship

  • 3 students will be awarded $500 Scholarships this year
    • One will go to Kankakee Valley High School students
    • One will go to Rensselaer Central High School students
    • One will go to students who attend other schools
  • Additionally, any student who is home-schooled may apply for the drawing
  • All candidates must be a son/daughter/legal ward of a Jasper County REMC member
  • Bruce & Sharon Nesius Memorial Scholarship Application (PDF)
  • Application timeframe is generally January through mid-April

4-H Electric/Electronics

  • The 4-H electricity/electronics program provides youth with educational information about electricity and how it can be used
  • The electricity/electronics program develops project skills including
    • Safe practices
    • Proper use of fuses and circuit breakers
    • Proper lighting techniques
    • Proper wiring techniques
    • Life skills such as decision-making, using science and technology, developing communication skills
  • Any son/daughter/legal ward of a Jasper County REMC member who submits an electric/electronic project for judging is eligible for a $15 REMC bill credit to help cover the costs of the student’s participation in 4-H

Youth Power & Hope Award

  • Indiana Connection and Indiana’s electric cooperatives are proud to sponsor the Youth Power and Hope Awards program
  • Since 2009, the program has annually honored Indiana youth in grades 5 through 8 for their community service
